Are we layout yet? Comparing Rust UI layout libraries
November 7 2026
I have recently made Are we layout yet?, a small website to compare UI layout libraries for Rust. The idea is to showcase what are the available libraries in the Rust ecosystem and compare their features and performance.
It currently includes Taffy, Morphorm, Torin, Yoga, ui-layout, Clay, Ply, Backer, Cephal and keru_layout. Some are written in Rust and others, like Yoga and Clay, are available through Rust bindings to their C++ and C engines.
Why
I work on Freya and Torin, so this is something I care about! I thought it would be interesting for the community to see what is available.
What is compared
The feature table covers things like wrapping, sizing, spacing, min/max constraints, aspect ratios and custom content measurement. It also distinguishes between partial support, a different layout model and things that are not verified.
Then there are the benchmarks, using shared PanGUI workloads adapted from Taffy's benchmark suite. These include nested layouts, wrapping, growing elements, constraints and some pretty wide trees.
You can select previous runs and switch the graph between relative time, milliseconds and average nanoseconds per workload node, using a linear or logarithmic scale. You can also show outliers, hover over libraries to highlight them or click to hide them if you only want to compare a few.
So, which one do I pick?
Well, it depends! These libraries dont all support the same features or do the same work.
So, while the performance results are important also make sure to look at the features to decide!
For who
Anyone building a GUI in Rust, working on a layout library, or simply curious about what is available.
Source code?
Yes! The website, benchmark adapters and methodology are on GitHub. If you spot something wrong in the comparison or an adapter, please open an issue or a PR.
You can check it out at arewelayoutyet.mespin.me.
Thanks :)
